“I’m in the bulk distribution business. We receive a lot of bulk items from our suppliers through several channels. We take it all in, check it and put it on the conveyor belt. The production line sorts, classifies and stores our raw material. Then throughout it’s journey it gets enriched and transformed into shippable products. Then we send it off to our customers.”

“Wow that sounds really cool and tangible. Can you believe I actually had you for a nerd? I guess you work for the Port of Rotterdam, or some distribution warehouse?”

“No I work for Rabobank. The items I was talking about is actually data.”

What you will really be doing
With your DevOps team you are building and expanding the Risk Data Warehouse (RDW) which holds Credit- and Liquidity Risk data. In the RDW you collect and store data, enrich it and transform it into meaningful information we distribute to our customers. The information we produce is used to manage and run the Rabobank and for accountability to regulators.
Your day-to-day activities range from actual coding to active involvement in the delivery pipeline, test automation, test execution for different test levels, defect management, test data management and test strategy, automated deployments and running/supporting the software in the production environment.

How you will be doing this
You are an all-rounder within the DevOps team. You will obviously have your own specialization, but you will also be able to perform all other tasks within the team
As part of your DevOps team you are responsible for changing and running the IT solutions you deliver. Where software development is not only about implementing business requirements, but also takes into account operational aspects such as maintainability, stability and security requirements. Not to forget continuous delivery regarding test- or behaviour driven development, test automation and measuring the software delivery on order to improve the team and the process.

All this requires a specific and challenging mindset: the ability and willingness to have responsibility for the full software development process and the drive to continually improve. The complexity of the job lies in ensuring a balance between running and changing the systems. In this balancing act you can really put your development-, cooperation- and communication capabilities to work!

Our stack
We live in the Microsoft BI world. SQL Server databases and SSIS, SSRS, SSAS. The RDW is modelled using the Data Vault methodology. Backlogs and Source Control in MS Team Foundation Server. For automated testing Specflow is used. The continuous delivery pipeline is built around TFS and XLDeploy.
It’s nice if you have recent C# or .NET knowledge.

What a day at the office could look like
First thing you do after you come in in the morning is check the build.
We have a “Green Build Culture”. This means that the whole team takes responsibility for a broken build, but as senior developer you take the initiative to ensure a broken build gets fixed and that it won’t break for the same reason again.

At 10 am you attend the daily standup for your team.

Back at your desk you pick up the more critical or challenging items from the sprint planning and work on them. At the end of the morning you meet up with one of the junior developers you are coaching.

After lunch you participate in a 3-Amigo session to ensure that the items on the backlog are properly specified from a technical and development perspective.

Your last activity today is a knowledge sharing meeting with your fellow Senior Software Engineers on the use of Specflow for test-driven development.

Who you are
• You love data and you are really, REALLY into BI with the SQL Server stack. You’re also really good at it and you know how to convince us of it.
• You like complexity; the challenge of the puzzle and the struggle solving it.
• You are a teamplayer, you cooperate, with everybody. Because it’s what you naturally do.
• You are the architect’s conscience, responsible for expressing the architecture in the systems you build, while pushing back when architecture loses touch with reality.
• Your first priority is to make sure that your team only delivers top quality code. But at the same time you realize that sometimes you have to deliver now, and refactor later. And you’re comfortable making that call.
• Sometimes you have to say “no” to your boss, or to your boss’s boss and you have no problem with providing a well balanced case to support your assertion.
• You embrace change and you celebrate failure, because you know that both are inevitable in IT projects, and you see both as opportunities to improve. Improve the product, the process and the person.
• You coach. We realize not everybody on the team is as awesome as you are, but while coaching more junior colleagues you do make them feel that way today, and make them be so tomorrow.
• You let yourself be coached equally. You too can learn a lot from others and you are open to that. You ask your colleagues for any feedback or help easily. Self-confidence is good, too much ego isn’t.

What you bring
Must haves:
• 5-10 years experience as a software engineer in datawarehouse environments
• Extensive knowledge of MS SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS, SSAS
• Experience with Agile and/or SCRUM software development
• Experience with automated testing, preferably with SpecFlow
• Knowledge of Continuous Delivery principles
• Datamodeling and datawarehousing techniques

Nice to haves and considered a plus:
• Experience with Microsoft Team Foundation Server
• Knowledge of Data Vault modelling
• Knowledge of XebiaLabs XLDeploy and/or XLRelease
• Knowledge of Biml
• Knowledge of SAP Hana or Oracle RDBMS
